Codman Square Bench

When my friend Destiny Palmer reached out about a sculpture project for Codman Square in Dorchester, MA, I couldn’t say no. Destiny and I went to Massart together, and we both majored in painting. Destiny has gone on to produce many large-scale murals in her signature abstract style, while I have transitioned into metalwork. For this sculpture, she came to us with the idea of artistically-arranged letters that spell “I AM CODMAN SQ.” Our design contributions to the project are the font (inflated bubble letters), as well as the tufted cushion angular bench. Both of these elements are produced using a hot inflation method, in which sandwiched and welded steel sheet is heated and inflated with compressed air. The sculpture is made from 316 stainless steel and coated in a duplex paint system. Destiny then hand painted a very special pattern on the words “I AM,” in which each element represents a part of the community that makes up Dorchester. This sculpture is the result of years of community engagement, meetings and collaboration, and we couldn’t be more proud to have it standing in Codman Square today.
